Step-by-Step Guide: Installing and Configuring Dup Scout Pro

Overview

This guide covers downloading, installing, licensing, initial configuration, and creating your first duplicate file scan with Dup Scout Pro on Windows. Assumes a Windows ⁄11 environment.

1) Download installer

  • Visit the official Dup Scout website and download the Dup Scout Pro Windows installer (choose 32-bit or 64-bit to match your OS).

2) Run installer

  1. Double-click the downloaded .exe.
  2. Accept User Account Control if prompted.
  3. Follow the setup wizard: accept license terms, choose Install location, and click Install.
  4. Wait for completion and click Finish.

3) Activate license

  • Open Dup Scout Pro.
  • Go to the Help or License menu.
  • Enter your license key exactly as provided and click Activate.
  • Confirm activation success; if activation fails, ensure internet access and retry.

4) Configure basic settings

  • Preferences/Options:
    • Set default scan paths and excluded folders (e.g., system folders).
    • Configure file size and type filters (minimum size to ignore small files, include/exclude extensions).
    • Adjust scan performance: number of worker threads to match CPU cores.
    • Enable logging and set log location if needed.
    • Schedule auto-updates if available.

5) Create a new scan task

  1. Click “New” or “Create Task”.
  2. Name the task (e.g., “Home Drive Duplicate Scan”).
  3. Add target locations: local folders, network shares, or NAS paths.
  4. Choose search criteria:
    • Compare by file content (recommended) or by file name/size.
    • Hash algorithm (MD5/SHA1) if selectable.
  5. Set filters: minimum file size, extensions to include/exclude, date ranges.
  6. Choose actions on duplicates: move to folder, delete (recommended: move to recycle or a quarantine folder), replace with link, or generate report.

6) Run the scan

  • Start the task and monitor progress.
  • Use the preview to inspect duplicate groups before applying actions.

7) Review results and apply actions

  • View duplicate groups in the results pane.
  • Select files to keep and files to act on.
  • Use bulk selection rules (keep newest, keep largest, keep in a specific path).
  • Apply chosen action (move/delete/replace). Prefer moving to a quarantine folder first.

8) Schedule recurring scans (optional)

  • Create or edit a task and enable scheduling.
  • Set frequency (daily/weekly) and time.
  • Ensure the host machine is on and network paths are reachable at scheduled times.

9) Backup and safety tips

  • Always back up important data before mass deletion.
  • Use “move to folder” rather than permanent delete for the first runs.
  • Exclude system and program folders to avoid breaking applications.
  • Test on a small folder first to confirm settings.

10) Advanced configuration (optional)

  • Configure network credentials for scanning protected shares.
  • Enable email or report notifications if supported.
  • Integrate with scripting via command-line mode for automation.
  • Adjust memory and thread usage for large-scale scans.
